Keep your gear clean and functional with these simple steps:
- Before First Use: Rinse the cap, hose, and bite valve with warm, soapy water and flush thoroughly.
- Daily Cleaning: Flush the tube and bite valve with warm water after every use. Remove the bite valve periodically to clean inside with a cotton swab.
- Deep Clean: Soak components in a vinegar/water solution, 1 to 3 ratio, for 20 minutes to remove mineral buildup and bacteria. Avoid bleach, as it can degrade the silicone.
- Dry & Store: Hang the tube vertically to air dry completely. Never store while damp to prevent mold.
- Pro-Tips: Hand wash only. Do not use with boiling liquids or put in the dishwasher, as high heat can damage the seals.
FAQ
Will this straw kit fit my specific canteen?
This kit is designed for standard U.S. G.I. style canteens featuring the 38mm narrow-mouth threading. It is fully compatible with 1-quart and 2-quart plastic canteens.
Note: This kit will not fit wide-mouth bottles (like Nalgene Oasis) or non-standard civilian water bottles.
Is the material safe and BPA-free?
Yes. The drinking tube and bite valve are made from high-quality, food-grade materials that are 100% BPA-free and safe for regular use in the field.
Can I use this with my military Gas Mask (CBRN) cap?
No. This kit is a complete system that includes its own dedicated replacement cap. To use the hands-free straw system, you must replace your current canteen cap (including NBC/Gas Mask caps) with the modified cap provided in this kit.
Does the cap leak if the canteen is stored upside down?
No, not when the cap is assembled correctly. Our kits are engineered with a sealed drink tube grommet. To ensure a waterproof seal, always verify the cap is screwed on level (not cross-threaded) and that the grommet is seated flat in the canteen cap.
Can't get suction. What's wrong?
If you aren't getting suction, it's usually due to one of four quick-fix issues. Check these in order:
- Check the Bite Valve (New Silicone Stick): Most new bite valves are made of medical-grade silicone that can "self-seal" or stick together during shipping. The Fix: Use your fingers to firmly pinch the slit of the bite valve a few times to ensure it's actually open. You may need to gently massage the valve to "break" the initial seal.
- Check the Air Seal (The "Hiss" Test): For suction to work, the system must be airtight. If air is leaking in through the cap, water won't stay in the tube. The Fix: Ensure the cap is screwed on perfectly straight and tight. If you hear a "hissing" sound when you try to drink, air is escaping. Check that the internal rubber gasket is seated flat inside the cap.
- Check the Internal Straw Connection: Inside the canteen, there is a tube that must reach the water. If this tube has come loose from the underside of the cap, you'll only be sucking air. The Fix: Open the canteen and ensure the internal straw is firmly pushed onto the intake port on the bottom of the cap. Ensure the straw is long enough to reach the bottom of the canteen.
- Check for Kinks: If you are using a canteen cover or have the tube routed through a backpack, the hose may be pinched. The Fix: Ensure there are no sharp bends or "kinks" in the hose that could be blocking the flow of water.
The rubber grommet on the cap popped out. How do I reinstall it?
Don't worry, the grommet is designed to be removable for deep cleaning, and it is easy to reinstall if it slips out. Follow these steps to get it back in place:
- Remove the Tube: Pull the drinking tube completely out of the grommet first.
- Seat the Grommet: Press the rubber grommet back into the hole in the canteen cap. Make sure the "groove" of the grommet is seated firmly around the plastic edge of the hole so it stays secure.
- Re-insert the Tube: Push the end of the drinking tube back through the center of the grommet until it is at your desired depth.
💡 PRO TIP: To make reassembly effortless, wet the end of the drinking tube with a little water. The water acts as a natural lubricant, allowing the tube to slide through the rubber grommet without friction, preventing the grommet from popping back out during installation.
